The Xigo Nanotools Acorn Area™ is a unique laboratory bench top device that utilises NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) to determine the surface area of particles suspended in a liquid and is ideal for R&D and QC applications.
Unlike the traditional BET method, with the Acorn Area™technique, there is no need for sample preparation and the 1 ml unsuspended sample volume can be analyzed in less than 5 minutes.
Principle of Operation: The liquid in contact with the surface of a particle behaves differently from that of the bulk, or "free" liquid and this effect can be detected through NMR relaxation and diffusion measurements. The AreaQuant software differentiates that behavior and quantifies the surface area from these measurements. Optional accessories include an 8mm and 10mm paste cells, flow through cell for at/on line measurements and a drop size measurement upgrade.
The Acorn Area™ is ideal for slurries, emulations, colloidal and Nano materials or indeed any substance that is manufactured in a liquid phase; it makes no assumptions about or is limited too particle size or shape and can measure samples at high concentrations.
Measurements with the Acorn Area are simple and easy. Suspensions and emulsions can be measured non-invasively, without dilution. One ml of the dispersion is placed in a glass vial and then inserted into the sample chamber. The test sequence is initiated with a key stroke and within minutes, the proprietary AreaQuantTM software algorithm reports the total measured surface area.
