INSTRUMENTATION FOR BATTERY DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING

Batteries are essential power sources for every application from your new MP3 player, to the development of carbon neutral transportation. As demand for new and more powerful battery packs grows so do materials requirements. Setaram offers you a broad range of technologies for your laboratory, including traditional TGA and DSC as well as Gas Sorption techniques.
We present a small sample of the experiments that can be obtained with some of our system (from assessing performance to "abuse testing" and of course for the development of new material), and encourage you to contact us for more information.

Self discharge test

C80 Calorimeter
A critical measurement of battery performance is it's ability to hold a charge during ambient conditions, a measurement of it's shelf life.
Calvet Calorimeters (C80/MS80) and Large Volume Calorimeters(LVC from 1 liter to 90 liters) offer a range of different volumes and sensitivities to assess almost every type of battery, from a single 18650 Li-Ion battery to an entire battery pack or laptop sheet.
Calvet Calorimetry gives you unmatched sensitivity and flexibility.

After 55 hours the 9 batteries dissipate 24 µW
which corresponds to 24/9 = 2.7 µW by battery [1]

Life cycle tests

MS80 Calorimeter

The charge/discharge of a battery is a chemical reaction, and by definition can be measured by following the thermal performance over repeated charge/discharge cycles.
Using Calvet Calorimetry is a precise and rapid way to determine the true reversibility of a battery cycle and therefore it's performance over a wide range of operational conditions.

Abuse testing

BTC
Abuse testing: Setaram presents the range of Adiabatic Battery Calorimeters from HEL - from small volume for single cells, to entire battery packs; The HEL range can measure the performance of a battery under overcharge, over temperature and even to measure the UL Hot box test in a single calorimeter.

Thermal stability

C80 Calorimeter
When the temperature of a Li-ion battery increases because of abusive conditions (e.g., short circuit, overcharge, heating) selfheating may be initiated. Various exothermic and endothermic reactions involving both the solution and the electrodes can occur inside the battery. The C80 calorimeter is used with the high pressure stainless steel vessel to study the thermal stability of several commonly used organic solvents
and electrolytes and to investigate the kinetic process of the related reactions.

Ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC) are the most widely used solvents and LiPF6 is the dominant solute used in practical lithium ion batteries - [2]

CellTest

Single and multi-channel system configurations are available with many specialized capabilities including anode / cathode impedance measurements, GSM / CDMA pulse tests, harmonic analysis and high speed ohmic drop analysis.
Traditional EIS studies were developed to measure the properties of the electrode at the open circuit or equilibrium potential. However, fuel cell and battery scientists are often interested in the performance of the device at potentials far away from equilibrium and under load.

Non-linear EIS is a powerful tool for the development of the understanding of processes that occur in energy storage devices. With modern instrumentation such as the Solartron ModuLab or CellTest systems, verification of results such that measurement are ‘quasi linear’, is facilitated by employing simple noise and harmonics.

Complex plane diagrams of impedance spectra of a 1.5 V alkaline battery. Note that increasing the ac stimulus level from 5 aA (blue) to 20 mA (red) greatly improved the quality of the impedance data.
